Thematic Areas of UNFPA's Programmes in Nepal
In the last 50 years, Nepal has made steady progress in modernizing its infrastructure and contributing to improvement of public administration sector. Access to, and availability of, basic services, including primary education and health care, has increased significantly. Yet, access continues to be a major problem in Nepal.
Challenges include the mountainous and hilly topography, inadequate quality of care, supply and distribution problems, lack of awareness, weak outreach, poverty and many socio-cultural practices that are not conducive to effective utilization of services. Therefore, UNFPA's strategy at the community level aims to increase universal access by covering quality of care, advocacy support and promotion of health-seeking behaviours. UNFPA is also seeking appropriate interventions to address sexual and gender-based violence and sexually transmitted infections, which have seen an increase in Nepal's volatile post-conflict environment.
