UNFPA Guiding Principles and Programmes
UNFPA promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV and AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. Through improved reproductive health, and by promoting a balance between population dynamics and socio-economic development, UNFPA strives to contribute to a higher quality of life for all Nepalese people.
UNFPA's core strategies in Nepal are to:
- Support the Government of Nepal in the realization of Nepal's National Health Sector Programmes
- Strengthen decentralization in local governance
- Improve service provision
- Ensure people's participation in policy-making, programmes and activities
- Promote gender equality and women's empowerment
- Advocate for policy changes and strengthen capacities of national partners
- Develop a knowledge base on key population and reproductive health issues
- Improve partnerships with the private sector, international organizations, Volunteer Involving Organizations (VIOs), civil society and donors
- Work in close cooperation with all the UN agencies
UNFPA further guides its programmes by the Plan of Action set forth at the 1994
International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo and by the eight
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) derived from the Millennium Declaration adopted by 189 Member States in 2000.
UNFPA's Country Programme is an integrated reproductive health, population and development, and gender initiative. Current Sixth Country Programme has been implemented at the national and community level in line with the United Nations Development Assistance Framework in Nepal in support to the Government Interim Plan (2008-2010).
