UN Agencies
In collaborating with the other UN agencies, and benefiting from each one's strengths and expertise, UNFPA more efficiently and effectively reaches its mission of improving population management, reproductive health and gender equity, and achieving sustainable development in Nepal.
Inter-agency partnerships are vital in scaling up UNFPA's initiatives and meeting the goals set forth in the
International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Millennium Development Goals.
All the UN agencies working in Nepal have developed a common strategic framework for operational activities in Nepal- called the
UN Development Assistance Framework 2008-2011 (UNDAF). This framework provides a collective, coherent and integrated UN system response to Nepal's priorities and needs.
UNFPA's Present Country Programme (CPAP) conforms to the UNDAF and to the UNFPA's Global 2008-2011 Strategic Plan (SP).
Within the UN System in Nepal, the United Nations Country Team has established theme groups and task forces to coordinate and manage the implementation of the UN Development Assistance Framework and country programmes. These joint programmes, joint programming and joint activities help build strong partnerships within and beyond the UN system. UNFPA currently chairs gender, HIV/AIDS and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 groups. The theme groups and task forces report to the United Nations Country Team. Their mandate includes reviewing joint activities, reviewing monitoring and evaluation activities, and ensuring information sharing. All UN agencies are encouraged to participate in all meetings of the theme groups and task forces and relevant and interested stakeholders are invited.
The areas of UN Country Team Nepal joint programming:
- HIV and AIDS, taking into account the emerging issue of feminization of HIV in Far Western region due to returning male migrants in this peace process,
- Safe Motherhood with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO),
- Decentralized Basic Services Delivery with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNICEF,
- Sexual and Gender Based Violence in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 with United National Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), UNDP, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UNICEF.
Specifically, UNFPA will contribute through its advocacy and understanding of the centrality of reproductive health to poverty reduction, capacity on desegregation of data and lessons learned on programming on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
