UNSCR 1325

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

UNFPA recognizes the positive impact that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have at the national and grass-root levels. Therefore, for more than 30 years, UNFPA Nepal has supported international and national NGOs in implementing diverse programmes, aimed at improving Nepal's reproductive health and other important population concerns.

Some examples of UNFPA's partnerships with NGOs are:

  • The United Nations for International Partnerships/United Nations Foundation project: Stronger Voice for Reproductive Health, focuses on improving the Quality of Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in Nepal. It is in its second phase and is being implemented by Samjhauta/Nepal (SN) in 15 Village Development Committees (VDC) of Saptari district with the help of 5 local community-based organizations: Sky Integrated Community Development Center, Save the Saptari, Shree Dharmi Halfa Malila VIkash Club, Saptari Community Development Center, and Community Women Health Promotion Center. The Rural Women's Development and Unity Centre (RUWDUC) and GTZ are also implementing NGO partners working in 10 VDCs of Dadeldhura district.

  • The European Commission/UNFPA Reproductive Health Initiative for Youth in Asia (RHIYA) programme in Nepal. The project, which focused on sexual and reproductive health through 92 youth information centers and 55 Youth Friendly Services centres for youth at the community level, was implemented and initiated during its first phase both by national NGOs in support with international NGOs and during its second phase by seven local partner NGOs in collaboration with government and private sectors in 93 VDCs and 7 municipalities of 19 districts.

  • The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department funded project Delivering Mobile Reproductive Health Outreach Services to Conflict-Affected Populations, in which UNFPA partnered with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and the Public Health Concern Trust (PHECT) in implementing mobile reproductive health camps and conducting prolapse surgery camps.

  • The Population and Reproductive Health Integrated Community Based Programme works with two local NGOs as implementing partners in each of its working districts (Saptari, Mahottari, Rautahat, Kabilbastu, Dang, Dadheldhura). As a rule, one of the implementing partners has to be Dalit NGO/CBO.

  • Sarwanam and Women for Human Rights (WHR): UNFPA, in collaboration with UNMIN and UNIFEM, supported Sarwanam in performing street dramas in 35 districts, especially in remote areas, on women's participation in the Nepalese peace process. WHR carried out one day workshops, immediately following the street drama performances, highlighting key messages on women's participation and explaining the role of women in the Constituent Assembly process and the UNSCR 1325 as a powerful advocacy tool.

  • The Forum for Women, Law and Development, worked on developing training and information materials on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (Women, Peace and Security), specifically for semi-literate grass roots organizations at the district level. A training manual and a pocket book guide, explaining each article of the resolution with simple pictures, was developed and implemented in the six PARHI districts, highlighting the importance of women's participation and protection in the Nepalese peace process, especially at the community based level.
