Donors
The UNFPA is the world's largest multilateral source of population assistance but its own resources are not part of the regular United Nations Budget funds. In order to fulfill UNFPA's mission of promoting the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity, UNFPA relies on a vast network of development partners. As of 2007, there were 181 donor partners with marked contributions in the UNFPA fund. Among the major donors were the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Japan, United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Canada, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Luxembourg, China, Austria, and Spain. UNFPA is currently supporting 140 countries with project grants and technical assistance.
Core resources of country offices come from partners through UNFPA headquarter; additionally country offices engage in fund raising activities. Numerous bilateral and multilateral collaborators provide technical and financial support to UNFPA in Nepal for population related and reproductive health programmes and activities. Donors' assistance, in turn, facilitates UNFPA's support to the Government of Nepal and numerous INGOs and NGOs in advancing UNFPA's mission goals.
One particularly noteworthy example of an effective donor/UNFPA partnership has been the effort to provide mobile reproductive health care services to women in remote areas. The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) funded project has allowed UNFPA to build the capacity of and cooperation between district level government officials and health workers, who jointly planned and attended to the mobile camps. This specific project has also strengthened the community based health referral system, aiding in the success of the camps and strengthening the government's own health service provision.
